About Us

GreenCollarWoman ™ is a community where women come together to find collaborative solutions for sustainable business and communities.  We aim to bring together women with each other and with responsible businesses, recruiters, and education and training providers in the green economy. We're a small community with ambitions to grow into a worldwide phenomenon with your help!

We believe that women are powerful agents of change in the green economy and that women leading sustainability initiatives is an untapped opportunity for the economy, for businesses and for communities.

Our Story

GreenCollarWoman™ started with an observation -- that at home, in the workplace and in our communities, women are passionately engaged around issues of climate change, sustainability and 'green'. Across homes, communities and organisations, you will invariably find a 'green lady' who is leading the charge to introduce organic and fairtrade coffee into the lunchroom, to implement recycling policies, to reduce waste, to save energy. At conferences, seminars and workshops filled with sustainability consultants who advise other organisations about how to 'green' their business and operations, often (although not always!) the number of womens' faces outnumber those of men. Perhaps the single greatest observation is that in conversations with women about sustainability, climate change and 'green', the word 'passion' seems to crop -- A LOT!

It has become clear that for many women, being sustainable/ethical/going green isn't simply something women do, it's part of who we are. Being involved in and leading sustainability initiatives at work, at home, in our communities gives women the opportunity to combine our passion for making a difference with a profession or vocation. Above all, this involvement is related to a deep sense of satisfaction.

As a greencollarwoman myself [having working in Sustainable/Green I.T. for the last few years], I wanted to be part of a community of women in sustainability and couldn't find an existing community that gave me quite what I was looking for. So I created one! It just seemed natural to create a community to bring together like-minded people to share our experiences, triumphs, tribulations, and to provide insight, inspiration and strategies for success.  

Some facts and figures

The green economy is experiencing unprecedented growth:-

- £3 trillion worldwide low carbon market

- 1 million new jobs in the UK by the middle of the next decade; 42 million jobs in the US by 2038

- $71 billion for energy and environmental incentives in the US in President Obama’s stimulus plan

- $20 billion in green tax and incentives in the US in President Obama’s stimulus plan

- ...and there are similar trends in other parts of the world!

Research shows that women

- are over-represented in their concern for the environment,

- are seeking opportunities to combine their personal and professional values,

- can and are playing a unique leadership role in greening the economy, their workplace and their communities 

What do we do?

- Women: We are building a community where women can come together to share ideas, information, to give support and advice, and to find collaborative solutions to sustainable living and working

- Employers: We partner with employers to help them access the information and people they need to solve their sustainable business challenges.
 
- Recruiters: We provide recruiters with direct access to a large and diverse pool of skilled women who are passionate about working for responsible businesses.
 
- Education & training providers: We put education and training providers in front of thousands of potential students and help them to differentiate their institution and its programs.

These services are at various stages of development. Please be patient with us as we roll out the various services over the next few months. What if I'm a man? Does it mean I can't participate?

Of course not! Everyone is welcome to be part of the GreenCollarWoman™ community. While the community has been designed and created by women, predominantly for women and our topics, themes and events are created with women in mind, we are a community that is open to everyone. In other words, while our focus is women, it is by no means exclusive to women! So please, don't hesitate to join!
